This book brings together a significant portion of my laboratory memoirs, essays, and research, along with the encounters, experiences, and practices of two master alchemists whose teachings I compare and analyze throughout its pages. All of this converges on a single purpose: to understand why the cat was adopted as the emblem of our philosophical subject and how to uncover it, freeing it from the veils that conceal it from our eyes. It is the longest book I have written, with nearly 560 pages, profusely illustrated and accompanied by numerous photographs of previously unpublished processes. In its chapters, the reader will explore multiple paths—some obvious, others merely hinted at by philosophers—that, directly or indirectly, ultimately lead to the same subject. If this work has any merit, it will not be in offering definitive answers, but rather in gathering and organizing years of observations, experiments, and reflections on the most elusive of subjects: that which the ancients, quite rightly, called Prima Materia.
